Parking on campus has certainly changed in the years (since 1989). However being a commuter I am not on campus during peak times. For this semester the best place to park was directly behind Dorman Hall. The worst place would be the Vet School as this would be an awfully long walk. Even with class beginning at 4 each week I did avoid tickets and consider that as a mission accomplished.
My son may be in school here but I do believe a parking garage is in the future for this campus. Perhaps when our stadium will hold 75,000 plus as the big spenders will need curbside service.

Ending the Year
While this assignment has not been difficult or taxing onthe brain it certainly has been the most difficult for me to complete. I just never adjusted my mind to remember I have to post on blogspot everyweek. However I see the benefit of using this medium in the classroom in place of journal writing or other free thinking exercises.
A roundup of Vardaman FFA activities for fall have included - FUNDRAISING. With tough economic times many of the school clubs and associations are responsible for raising monies needed for activities. We have participated in the Sweet Potatoe Festival and sold over 800 bushels of sweet potatoes in one day. Additionally we sold turkeys and hams for Thanksgiving and fruit for Christmas. All together these three are our big three and will provide enough funds for the remainder of the year.
Our next course of action is to start practice for competition this spring. We have a lot of participants looking to compete and the competition will be fierce. All members are looking forward to Federation at Houstion and qualifying for district and/or state competition.

One Quarter of the Year
Here we are - 9 weeks test week! The first sign students are worried about their grades and the most popular question "What can I do to get my grade up?". The typical response involves starting 9 weeks ago; You know studying! However most of them are in good shape and will have no problems at home this weekend with their report cards.
FFA has gotten off to a busy start. We graduated 17 seniors last year and thus the bulk of our competition experience. Therefore we are starting early training teams for spring competitions. Also we are in full swing of fundraising for this year to afford practice material(s) and cover travel costs.
As you can imagine in Vardaman our biggest is selling sweet potatos at the "Sweet Potato Festival" the first weekend in November. We will move about 750 to 1000 bushels of sweet potatos in one day! I encourage anyone who has not been to the festival before to try to be here November 6th with the many vendors and events that take place on main street.

Oh the Words from 9th Graders!
What interesting times we have when teaching 9th graders. In the past week we had a guest speaker who has just finished research in Rwanda. He visited with my 9th grade students and explained how methane gas was captured and used to heat water to cook in their homes. For your information two cows will provide four hours of cooking in the home. The next day we had a short quiz from our guest presentation and the question was "What animal must a family own to have methane gas for cooking?" A young lady responded, "Mr. Young I can remember the type of animal but not her name!". I also did not know the cow's name and was not much help to her!
Same class different young lady gives me a Redneck definition of ruminant that Jeff Foxworthy would appreciate. She was not sure what animals were ruminants but when asked if anyone could define she states "Mr. Young there is no room-n-ant closet." You will just have to sound out for yourself to appreciate.
Teaching can be very funny at times and we must learn to laugh with the kids because tommorrow is my day to make a mistatke I'm sure.

Kicking Off the New Year - School Year That Is!
The school year has started and as usual we all get busy really quick! Not only am I involved with teaching classes but I also have college classes that I am being taught. The whole idea of participating as a 'lifelong learner' is so exiciting!
The beginning of school is so bumpy and takes a few weeks to get the kinks worked out. I am no different and have not been as good of a student as I have a teacher (I HOPE). I plan on all of my bumps and kinks to be behind me and move forward and have a positive sememster at Vardaman High School and in AIS 6203.
